OUR METHOD

Why the Avery Prep approach works for GRE

The GRE rewards both content knowledge and test strategy. We build both — starting from a real baseline and building toward consistent, reproducible performance.

01

Baseline + section-by-section plan

We assess quant, verbal, and writing before prescribing anything — so prep targets actual gaps, not assumed ones.

02

Quant skill-building and strategy

Content instruction plus GRE-specific problem-solving approaches so you’re doing GRE math, not just math.

03

Verbal strategy and high-leverage practice

Vocabulary, reading comprehension approach, and text completion strategy — building toward consistent, accurate performance.

04

Timed sets + review

Regular timed practice and review so improvements hold under real test conditions — not just in low-stakes practice.

05

Retention-focused methods

Techniques that make learning stick so your score reflects your ability on test day — including after weeks of prep fatigue.

The result

A student who walks into the GRE with a reliable score range — and the confidence to reproduce it.

“Having a tutor kept me honest about the work. I couldn’t drift the way I did when I was self-studying.”

— GRE student

STRUCTURE

What tutoring actually looks like

Most GRE students meet 1–2x per week — with session length and between-session work calibrated to your schedule and timeline.

  • Targeted instruction in quant and verbal, building from your current baseline
  • Timed practice sets with Timed practice sets with detailed review of errors and patterns, detailed review
  • AWA instruction and essay practice for the Analytical Writing section
  • Between-session practice assigned to what was covered — not a generic question bank

Sessions are structured differently depending on where the student is in their prep cycle — earlier sessions focus more on skills, later ones on full-length timed sets and pacing.

Sample Weekly Rhythm

  • Session 1 — Skills + content
Baseline review → targeted instruction on quant or verbal priority areas
  • Between sessions (45-60 min)
Focused practice sets aligned to session content
  • Session 2 — Timed practice
Timed section sets → review of errors and pacing patterns
  • Weekly check-in
Progress reviewed → plan adjusted around your test date and schedule

TIMING

When should you start?

GRE prep compounds over time. The earlier the start, the more flexibility there is to build accuracy before adding speed.

Ideal: 3–5 months before test date

Enough time to build content foundations, develop section strategies, run full timed tests, and arrive confident — not scrambling.

Tight timeline? A focused plan still works.

We’ve helped students see real improvement in 6–8 weeks. A compressed plan is different — but the right structure and accountability can still move the score.

The quant instruction was exactly what I needed. I’d been avoiding the math but the tutor made it approachable and my score in that section improved significantly.

FAQ

Questions worth asking

If something isn’t answered here, ask us directly. The consultation is free and there’s no pressure.

The GRE General Test has three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Most grad school applicants focus on Verbal and Quant — but we cover AWA as well, particularly for programs that weight writing heavily.

Yes. Plans can be section-specific. If the diagnostic shows quant is the bigger opportunity, we’ll weight sessions accordingly. Many students with strong verbal backgrounds make their biggest gains by focusing intensively on quant.

Typically 45–60 minutes between sessions for GRE students. Every assignment is tied to session content and purposeful — we don’t assign practice just to fill hours.

For many students, yes — especially if the score is close to a program’s target range. A real test result gives us a much clearer picture of where points are being lost than a practice diagnostic alone.

Every Avery Prep tutor goes through a rigorous vetting and training process. We recruit experienced tutors from around the country with strong academic backgrounds and a proven record of results.
