IS THIS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Students who can use our support

The CPP/HiSET opens real doors — early college enrollment, career flexibility, and more. Here’s who we help get there.

Students pursuing the CPP for early high school equivalency in California — including student actors, athletes, and early college entrants

Students who need strong reading, writing, and math foundations to pass all three sections with confidence

Families who want a calm, organized weekly plan — not a stressful last-minute push before the test date

Students who’ve struggled with traditional high school structure but are ready to demonstrate real proficiency

CPP

California Proficiency Program — replaced CHSPE in 2023, now uses HiSET

OUR METHOD

Why the Avery Prep approach works for CPP/HiSET

The CPP uses HiSET subtests in Reading, Writing, and Math. Our approach builds all three — from a real baseline, not a generic prep program.

01

Baseline aligned to exam sections

We assess across Reading, Writing, and Mathematics before prescribing a plan — so nothing important gets skipped.

02

Targeted skill-building

Instruction in each section tailored to the specific demands of the HiSET format and the CPP passing standards.

03

Practice with real feedback

Regular timed practice with detailed review — so performance improves reliably rather than unpredictably.

04

Pacing and test confidence

Strategies for managing time and pressure in all three sections, including the written essay component.

05

Flexible scheduling

The CPP can be taken in sections on separate days. We’ll build a plan that accounts for your testing approach and timeline.

The result

A student who passes all three sections with confidence — and has a clear path forward to college, career, or both.

“She passed all three sections on the first attempt. The plan made it feel achievable, not overwhelming.”

— Parent of CPP student

STRUCTURE

What tutoring actually looks like

Most students meet 1–2x per week with consistent practice between sessions — calibrated to current level and test timeline.

  • Targeted instruction in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics aligned to HiSET section requirements
  • Timed practice with detailed review — so the student understands what to do differently
  • Essay instruction and practice for the Writing section’s extended response component
  • Between-session assignments that reinforce what was covered without overloading the student

The CPP allows sections to be taken separately, which affects how we sequence the plan. We’ll factor in your testing approach from the start.

Sample Weekly Rhythm

  • Session 1 — Skills + content
Baseline review → targeted instruction on priority sections
  • Between sessions (30-45 min)
Focused practice sets aligned to session content
  • Session 2 — Timed practice
Timed section work → review of errors and pacing
  • Weekly check-in
Progress reviewed → plan adjusted around your upcoming test sections

TIMING

When should you start?

The right amount of prep depends on your current level and how soon you’re testing. Most students benefit from 6–12 weeks of structured prep.

Ideal: 8–12 weeks of consistent prep

Enough time to assess, build skills, and practice under timed conditions across all three sections before test day.

Testing soon? A focused plan still helps.

Even 4–6 weeks of targeted prep can meaningfully improve your score and test-day confidence. We’ll build around your actual timeline.

FAQ

Questions worth asking

If something isn’t answered here, ask us directly. The consultation is free and there’s no pressure.

The CHSPE was discontinued in June 2023 and replaced by the California Proficiency Program (CPP). The CPP uses HiSET subtests in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Passing all three earns a Certificate of Proficiency, which is legally equivalent to a California high school diploma.

Yes — the CPP allows you to take sections on separate days, either at a testing center or online with live proctoring. We factor this into the plan from the start so you can sit sections when you’re most ready for each one.

The CPP requires a score of at least 15 out of 20 on each of the three sections. The passing threshold for CPP students is higher than for older students taking the full HiSET exam.

Students must be enrolled in high school and either be at least 16 years old, or will have completed one year of 10th grade by the end of the semester when the test is administered.

Every Avery Prep tutor goes through a rigorous vetting and training process. We recruit experienced tutors from around the country with strong academic backgrounds and a proven record of results. From there, tutors are trained in the methods Krystyna has developed over the last 15 years to help students reach perfect and near-perfect scores. Our team participates in ongoing professional development, receives regular observation and feedback, and continues learning directly from Krystyna.
